Latest Club News here.

The WVCC, popularly known as the "VETS", was formed in September 1983 by a group of ex racing cyclists who wanted to continue in active competition and to also promote the recreational and social side of the sport.

The Club was the first New Zealand veterans cycling club, initially specialising in time trial events. The original name of the Club was the Veterans' Road Time Trial Association (VRTTA) but the name was changed when road races were introduced into the annual programme. There now tends to be a 50/50 balance between time trials and road races with a time trial one week and a road race the next. There is a growing interest in 'Veteran' or 'Masters' cycling competition and members of our Club compete in the Masters Games and in events run by other Clubs.

Getting started -

The Club usually suggests that new members who have no previous experience in the sport participate in some of the time trial events before competing in group road races. This helps to determine which road race handicap group is 'best-fit' for a new member - there is nothing worse for a non-experienced rider than to be dropped off the group within the first  100 metres from the start of a race.

Experience is not necessary to start participating in time trial events. Many of our members are new to the sport of cycling, and within a short time are able to compete very successfully against the more experienced riders. Prospective members are given every encouragement and assistance to help them take part in one of the most exciting and satisfying sports in the world, The general emphasis is on active participation as much as on individual success.

Our events -

A calendar of events is produced annually - the racing season runs from September to April

Events are seldom cancelled but if they are, the cancellation will be broadcast on 2ZB. In the time trial events, riders compete against the clock, usually over measured distances ranging from 16km, 25km, 40km and 80km, over a range of flat and hilly courses. Road races are held over distances from 38km to 80km over varied courses. Most events are run on a handicap basis giving all riders a fair chance of winning. Additionally, there is a "rider of the day" award for the rider judged to have had the most meritorious performance. Time keeping and tea duties are attended to by Members and with everyone playing their part, each Member only needs to put their names forward twice a season. In the off-season, Club rides are held and off-season 'cycle cross' events and MTB events are a future possibility. Pre-season 'training weekends' have also been held in recent years.

We have a social side too -

Our events are well attended and the riders always enjoy an after-race tea or coffee while reviewing the results and swapping race experiences. This is the time when a few riding and equipment tips can be passed on by the more experienced. Club nights are held from time to time and may involve a guest speaker or a demonstration or the viewing of a race video etc. Sometimes a 'bring and buy' is incorporated also.

Age groups -

For most events we race in 5 year age groups, starting with 30 years for women, and 35 years for men.

Communication -

The club utilises email and this website to communicate with its members. It is recommended that members check both on a regular basis to keep up to date with club activities. Results will be published on the website as soon as possible after each event.

So welcome once again and make yourself known to some of the members when you come along.
Safe and enjoyable riding from your Committee and all your fellow Club members.

See you at the start line!
